Staying in a Cabin in Gatlinburg

Staying in a Cabin in Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg in Smoky Mountains is becoming more and more popular as a vacation spot, with nearly 10 million visitors arriving in the area each year. With mild winters and summers, Gatlinburg and small towns nearby are a common destination for people who enjoy hiking, fishing, horseback riding, bike riding, canoeing, whitewater rafting, river tubing, skiing and snowboarding. Gatlinburg accommodations range from moderately priced Gatlinburg cabins to exclusive private Gatlinburg chalets with their European charm.

When staying in a cabin in Gatlinburg, you are still close to shopping and theaters and can enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, or skiing. Here are ten essential things you can do while staying in the Gatlinburg cabin or chalet:

1. Take a country car trip. You can take a scenic route and visit the historic sites of Gatlinburg by car. The Newfound Gap Road runs across the Smoky Mountains and links you to park roads and footpaths that will take you to other places of interest in Gatlinburg.

2. Walking. Nothing beats the pleasure of sightseeing from a smooth well-groomed path across a spectacular forest with breathtaking mountain views. Fitness and stress relief of walking can never be underestimated. All the walking trails are carefully mapped and accessible from all main roads. Any Gatlinburg hotel will provide you with a guide that helps you find a trail that fits your walking speed and general fitness.

3. Bike in the mountains. If you decide to take a biking trip, alone or with your family, you can choose from a number of different trails. Biking trails in Gatlinburg range from an easy family-friendly gravel path, to the challenging mountain bike trails that require special equipment and can be quite enduring. You can rent a bicycle or bring one with you if you travel by car.

4. Horse Riding. If horseback riding suits your sense of adventure, you will find this family attraction to be quite popular in Gatlinburg. Hundreds of horses are located in stables across Gatlinburg. It is a great place to learn horseback riding, and no matter your riding skills, you will have a fun of your life. Gatlinburg cowboys even perform weddings in the western style!

5. Hiking. You need to obtain a permit for hiking overnight in the back-country. Make sure you come prepared with the right equipment and it’s worth noting that in some areas reservations are required to hike the Smoky Mountains trails.

6. Golf. The Gatlinburg Golf Course is close to all Gatlinburg cabins and Gatlinburg chalets. It is a fabulous year-round modern facility with challenging layouts and emerald fairways, beautifully wooded landscapes and well-manicured greens. A full service pro shop and food services area also work year-round.

7. Visit the wild life. Many people come to Gatlinburg to see black bears. They even choose to stay in Gatlinburg cabins that are close to bears – in the past few years, one hotel even offered a “bear suite” that overlooked a dumpster which bears visited often. Use common sense – these creatures can be quite dangerous.

8. Enjoy the traditional American food. If you want to try real American cuisine, Gatlinburg is the right place to start. From authentic regional treats in rustic settings to kid-friendly theme restaurants, over 100 restaurants work year-round.

9. Shop till you drop. Gatlinburg has more than 400 shops and five malls with handmade arts and crafts, unique traditional apparel and souvenirs. While loading up on souvenirs for everyone back home, you’re sure to find a little something for yourself.

10. And 100s of other things – including Gatlinburg Sky Lift that rides in the center of the town for a spectacular view of Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains, Mysterious Mansion, Gatlinburg’s largest scary house, rafting in the whitewater rapids, and visiting Star Cars Museum with it’s world’s best star car collection.

Looking for help about how to deal with a rental in Gatlinburg Tennessee (mycabinvacation) which rented a cabin but the jacuzzi leaked? It was $>250 per night and I rented on good faith that everything worked. What would you do?
I asked for a refund and they said no.

Unfortunately, they usually won’t do much after you leave. Most managers see it that if you waited to complain until you left, it wasn’t much of an issue and/or it didn’t really happen. If you spoke with someone while you were there and they didn’t do anything then, it is likely they won’t do anything now.

The best thing I can tell you is to give it one more try to see what they say. If you want, you can write them as well. It also is a good idea to let websites know about your experience at the cabin so they know. But be sure not just to tell the bad, be sure to give a well-rounded review and then you can use it on several sites as well.

But unfortunately, I don’t think there is much that can be done now.

Sorry to hear about your vacation!

Taking a road trip next week from NYC and am planning to stop in Gatlinburg, TN. From NYC to Gatlinburg is 12 hours. I would like to break the trip up in half and am looking for recommendations.

Just looking at the map, some choices that come to mind are Baltimore, MD, Blacksburg VA, or Harrisonburg, VA.

I was thinking about Williamsburg, but that takes me too far east.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

My family has done this EXACT trip many times.

Places we’ve stopped over the years, that we’ve found to be nice places with good hotel accommodations:

Hagerstown, MD
Harrisonburg, VA
Staunton, VA
Winchester, VA

Tip: That run down I-95 through NJ, the Philly area, and DC can be horrendous. Instead, head out along 78 to Harrisburg, and take I-81 down the rest of the way.

However, if you plan on seeing Washington, you can go 95.

If you get a really early start, though, you can pull this off in one day. It’s a long day, but we’ve done it successfully a few times.

One idea? Maybe don’t make a reservation. If you get an early start and don’t get stuck in traffic by the time you’re halfway through Virginia, you might consider trying to go all the way. If you have a reservation in Gatlinburg, call ahead and see if you can get an extra day. If not, maybe stop at one of the earlier-mentioned halfway points anyway, and have a leisurely Day Two to finish the trip.

Enjoy the ride!

The Glades Arts and Crafts Community of Gatlinburg, Tennessee

By Darryl Payne

One of the south’s lesser-known treasures is nestled in the hills adjacent to a popular village. What is it? The largest group of independent artists and craftsmen showing their skills. The Glades Arts and Crafts community is comprised of an eight-mile country road loop where over one hundred artists and craftsmen parade their trades. You’ll find a wide variety of art galleries, pottery barns, active workshops, independent artist showrooms, basket-making studios, and many more authentic local artisans.

Originally begun in the 1930′s, a visit to this unique location is still a visit to an earlier era, absent of industrial machines and computers. This was a time when a family community came together to share their talents with one another. Watch a master potter throw and spin clay into one-of-a-kind works on a wheel. Observe artists painting with various forms of art media, and then discover a mother/daughter team making beautiful jewelry they’ve designed together. Here originality and creativity occur daily.

Over the years this has been a place to come and discover the history and heritage that make up the Great Smoky Mountain legacy. What is so interesting about the artists and craftsmen is that they are continually seeking new and innovative ways of capturing their art form for today’s generation. Each year new artists are arriving to share their gifts and talents with the community to make it one of the most unique places to visit in the Smoky Mountains.

To visit the Arts and Crafts Community, simply get on Hwy. 321 in Gatlinburg and turn onto Glades or Buckhorn Road then follow the signs marked for Great Smoky Mountain Arts and Crafts Community. (It’s a very distinctive sign that has MEMBER written at the top.)

My husband and I will be going to Gatlinburg next weekend for our 14th anniversary and I’d like to take him somewhere nice and cozy with a classy atmosphere. It could also be located in Pigeon Forge or in the area.

There is a really nice restaurant right off of the Gatlinburg Strip called "The Peddler". If you are coming from Pigeon Forge, you go to the end of the strip and take a right. It is one street over. They are right beside the little stream and they have lights that shine on it at night. It is really beautiful. Ask to sit by the windows. They also have an amazing salad bar. I promise it is a nice place even thought it does have a salad bar!! It’s menu could be compared to a nice steakhouse-better than an Outback. It is a little pricey, but totally worth it. The lights are dim and there is a man that "peddles" his meat to your table. You actually get to see the cut of steak that you will be eating. He will cut it there in front of you. It is a neat experience. I eat there everytime I go to Gatlingurg. Hope you have fun!

The aquarium is cool. Hillbilly golf is also fun. As far as places to eat if you like seafood try Lineburgers it’s around light 7 or 8 in downtown Gatlinburg. They also have cheep draft beers if you sit at the bar. If you like BBQ try Corky’s.
